'Comet Lulin' on February 27, 2009

The photo shows the location of Comet Lulin (the arrow to the right) near the star Regulus in the Constellation Leo (highlighted with red lines). The comet is moving towards Orion and will be further up and right on this photo tomorrow.

I have been working on capturing a photo of this comet for the last couple of days, but my 200mm lens is just not long enough to get a good detailed picture. This photo was taken at 18mm to get the constellation in focus and provide a map for someone who might feel inspired to capture this once-in-a-lifetime event. So perhaps some of you Smugmuggers with the 400mm and 500mm (and longer) lenses can get a decent photo of this 'visitor' to post here for the rest of us 'wanna-be-astronomers'.

Here is a very good photo by 'Lee' at http://lbuckphotos.smugmug.com/gallery/1854681_YHfbM/1/481572280_fvMoD#481572303_dpqZM

'The Cookie Pointer'

When we ask Elli "Show me - what do you want?" there is no chance of mistaking her answer. We call her the 'Cookie Pointer'.

Late night 'idle drivel': Technically this is not a great shot - but the best I could do today in scrounging up a photo from the archives as I've been at work from 7am until 8pm today and it really is about time to hit the hay for another early morning wakeup at 5am.

The recent rain storms have allowed the grasses to come back to life and change the landscape from 'golden' brown to (mostly) green. Storm clouds are gathering again above the hills.

'Flowering tree'

Another spring photo of flowering trees - the name of which is unknown to me. Perhaps someone can identify this one for those of us that are still in the dark.

'Japanese Magnolias'

A part of me liked the fact that San Francisco Bay is a bit slanted to the left and it looks like it is emptying back in to the Pacific Ocean - so I did not correct for the horizon. Please let me know if that is a distraction - I have the more horizontal photo posted here http://kianta.smugmug.com/gallery/5718034_ZKDwB#493785241_Ac6E3

I had absolutely no idea about what kind of a tree grows these flowers until 'Beckyb' (see her comment below) identifies the tree as a 'Japanese Magnolia'. Thank you so very much 'Beckyb'! Very much appreciated!
